Question: do the Flames have what it takes to make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
This one is going to be pretty brief because, honestly, they’re the Calgary Flames and no one on that team beyond Iggy or Kiprusoff, or maybe Glencross is worth a damn. And it’s Friday night.
That being said, I’d like to focus on one of those players: Jarome Iginla. The Flames captain is 34, and many people are questioning whether he has enough left in the tank. He is clearly the heart and soul of this team and the team has always depended on him and will, once again, lean heavily on him this season. He has had a slow start, putting up 2 goals in the first 15 games each of the last 2 seasons. That’s not good. At the end of the season, the veterans usually kick in and the Flames make a playoff push, but it usually ends up being to no avail (see:last year). And given the lackluster offseason they had, I see no reason to believe that that will change.
So no, I don’t think that as the Flames stand right now, they have what it takes to even get to the Playoffs, let alone to the Promised Land of a Stanley Cup. But, as is so clearly apparent, Iggy’s career is winding down. Who knows, maybe this is his all-in/Tim Thomas 2011 season?
