Caps start season off wrong, shut out by Preds in B’more

The Capitals started their season off on the wrong foot tonight, dropping their first (preseason) game 2-0 to the Predators. The game was played in Baltimore.

Recap: Chris Mueller scored at 17:31 of the 2nd period and Colin Wilson netted one at 9:59 of the 3rd for the only goals of the game. Pekka Rinne and Jeremy Smith split the game and shared the shutout.

Plus: Niclas Bergfors had 2 assists. Mueller had a goal and assist

Minus: Caps were shut out with Neuvirth in goal, Ovechkin, Semin in the lineup. Also, the ice was terrible.

It was the first hockey game in the city since the Baltimore Bandits of the American Hockey League left town 14 years ago. The Capitals last played in Baltimore in 1992, against their then-AHL affiliate, the Baltimore Skipjacks.

Dubbed the 2011 Baltimore Hockey Classic, the game drew a near-sellout crowd of 11,082 – even though ticket prices ranged from $34 to $147.

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau played 17 games for the Skipjacks during the 1984-85 season, and Nashville coach Barry Trotz was an assistant coach with the Skipjacks.
